About Alexa Allen
Alexa Allen is an artist, designer, and craftsperson based in Boulder, Colorado. Formally trained in woodworking and furniture design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Allen developed an early interest in contemporary craft and the relationship between material, form, and function.
After returning to Boulder, she turned her attention to leather, approaching it with the same curiosity and material-driven sensibility she had developed through woodworking. Over the past decade, Allen has built a studio practice centered on pushing leather beyond its traditional applications, combining traditional leatherworking techniques with tools and methods she has developed herself. Her work explores repetition, texture, graphic form, and the unexpected possibilities of the material, resulting in pieces that move between the sculptural and the functional.
Allen’s work includes one-of-a-kind objects, private commissions, architectural leatherwork, and collaborative projects. In 2026, she was commissioned by Birkenstock to create two large-scale leather works for the brand’s new Boulder store. Her work has also been featured in Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, 5280 Home, and Boulder Lifestyles.
PuSHING THE PROCESS
With Alexa’s background in woodworking, she soon realized she could push and explore the boundaries of what we traditionally think leather can do. Using a combination of traditional leatherwork tools and creating new tools and methods of working, Alexa creates unique pieces that are an unexpected and refreshing take on a classic material.
Working in this way allows her to take on interesting commissions and one-of-a kind projects for home and body. Each new collaboration is a exciting challenge that opens new possibilities for what leather can do.

Creating surface patterns and graphics give leatherwork a new dimension. Alexa uses print and molding techniques to shift between the leather’s rugged, masculine qualities and a softer, unexpected look.

From leather cuffs to cabinet drawer pulls and handbags to bowls, Alexa aims to create pieces that are soft and subtle, with just enough edge to surprise and delight.
